St. Jose Sanchez del
Rio
|
“¡Viva Cristo Rey!
(Long live Christ the King!)
¡Viva la Virgen de
Guadalupe!
(Long live the Virgin of Guadalupe!)” |
St. Jose Sanchez del Rio was killed in 1928 in the
Catholic citizens armed defense of their faith, their Church, and their
priests, whose lives who were under attack by the repressive Mexican
government. The government of that time was armed by the U.S.A. do
to the hostile anti-Catholic forces like the KKK, and the No-Nothings,
in the USA.
Jose carried the banner of the Catholic defenders.
In the movie, For Greater Glory it shows the Sacred Heart of Jesus on
one side, the Virgin of Guadalupe on the other.

When a wounded general of the army fighting against
the government had is horse shot out from under him, Jose offered to the
general his own horse. Jose proceeded on foot, but was later
captured, tortured, and killed. When prized roosters were placed
in an occupied Catholic Church Jose protested that the Church was a holy
temple of God, and not a barn.
The boys carrying his relic were without shoes, to
symbolize how Jose's souls cut off before he was required to walk
without shoes across sharp objects to his place of execution.

|
Just before his death, Jose was asked to renounce Jesus
Christ so that his life might be spared. Instead, he courageously
responded with all his heart, “¡Viva Cristo Rey!”
St. Jose Sanchez del Rio's relic is below. It has his dying
words along the horizontal bar,
“¡Viva Cristo Rey! which means
(Long live Christ the King!)
