MARY the “WOMAN”
Her God-given Title from the beginning
Sublime Vocation and Mission of Mary as:
Mother of God
Co-Redemptrix
Mother of Christ’s Mystical Body, the
Church
+
The First Creation:
“The man (Adam) said: ‘This one, at last, is bone of my bones and
flesh of my flesh; This one shall be called ‘WOMAN.’” (Gn 2:23).
“The man called his wife Eve, because she became the mother of all the
living.” (Gn. 3:20).
The New Creation:
Mary, the new Eve, is the WOMAN of the new creation together with
her Son, the new Adam (1 Cor 15:22).
Mary is the “Woman”
of Genesis, Cana and Calvary:
-
Genesis - God
himself, in his curse on the Serpent, associated Mary with the
mission of the redemption of the human race to be achieved by their
Son during his hour.
“The Lord God said to the serpent: ….
‘I will put enmity between you and the WOMAN,
and between your offspring and hers; He will strike at your head, while
you strike at his heel.’” (Gn 3:15)
-
Cana – Mary, moved
by the Spirit makes a request of her Son. Jesus reminds Mary of her
association with him in his redemptive mission to be accomplished
during his hour. He will anticipate his hour at her request. Jesus
waits upon her word as God did at the Annunciation. She gives it
with her last words in Sacred Scripture: “Do whatever he tells
you.” (Jn 2:5)
“Jesus’ mother told him, ‘They have no more
wine.’ Jesus replied: ‘WOMAN, what is that to me and to you? My
hour has not yet come.’” (Jn 2:4)
-
Calvary -
Jesus declares that Mary, the new Mother of all the living, is the
Mother of his Church, his Mystical Body.
“Seeing his mother there with the disciple whom
he loved, Jesus said to his mother, ‘WOMAN, behold your son!’
Then he said to the disciple, “Behold your Mother!’” (Jn 19:26.27)
